Movie Reviews:

October 9, 2009
- Action fans, the wait is over. Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme have finally re-teamed for Universal Soldier: A New Beginning, the sequel to their 1992 hit Universal Soldier. But although the stars are older and wiser this time around, the results aren't necessarily better.

The original concerned a squad of super-soldiers who are stronger, fitter and faster than the average man, and who operate without conscience or hesitation. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film was essentially an excuse to pit two of the biggest action stars of the day against each other, and for that very reason was a blast from start-to-finish.

Unfortunately, this belated sequel lacks the wit and charm of its predecessor, resulting in a po-faced action flick that has 'straight-to-DVD' written all over it.

The story is a simple one - terrorists kidnap a couple of kids and occupy the Chernobyl Nuclear Complex, surrounding the reactor with explosives and threatening to set them off unless their demands for hostage release are met.

They also happen to have a second generation 'Universal Soldier' under their control, a hulking monster of a man played by Ultimate Fighter Andrei 'The Pitbull' Arlovski. The powers that be therefore have no alternative to but to call upon their own super-soldiers to save the day.

The only trouble is, it's a full hour before Lundgren appears on-screen, while Van Damme only shows up sporadically, meaning that unless you are a fan of 'The Pitbull' - special move the repeated punch to the head - it's all a bit of an anti-climax.

Of the two stars, Van-Damme certainly has the more interesting role, with his Luc Deveraux trying to be re-introduced into society at the start of the film. Undergoing psychological rehabilitation in Switzerland, this is very much the 'Muscles from Brussels' channelling his JCVD character - a thoughtful, understated performance tinged with sadness and regret.

It would have been interesting if the film stayed with this Frankenstein-inspired plot strain, but soon enough Deveraux is being pumped full of drugs to re-release the monster, leading up to the long-awaited finale fight with Dolph.

Unfortunately, even that is a little underwhelming, the site of two middle aged men kicking the crap out of each other not quite as exciting as watching two athletes at their physical peak doing the same thing in the original.

The rest of the film is a gritty affair that basically revolves around terrorists arguing with each other, soldiers arguing with each other, and the Pitbull punching people in the head. Repeatedly.

Director John Hyams can certainly stage an action sequence, with the opening car chase a humdinger and a couple of punch-ups mid-way through proceedings sending the pulse racing. But in trying to ground the film in a more believable reality, he loses some of the joy and exuberance of the original.

It's still exhilarating to see Van Damme do his high-kicking thing, and aside from The Governator, no one plays a robot man better than Dolph Lundgren. But if you're a fan of the pair, we'd recommend giving this New Beginning a miss and re-watching the original, both to keep those fond Universal memories intact, and to enjoy two action legends at the height of their powers.
